Nutrinews: Food and Mood

Do you know that the food you eat actually helps put you in a good mood? The relationship between food and mood in individuals is complicated. It is controlled by serotonin, a chemical substance in your brain that regulates mood, appetite, sleep and impulse control. 

Studies showed that serotonin level is related with positive mood state and intake of carbohydrate may increase production of serotonin. Contrary, diet rich in protein will decrease brain serotonin levels. Generally, people consider sweet stuff like ice-cream, chocolate, and candies as food high in carbohydrates. However, this is normally judged only by its sweet taste instead of it nutritional value. In fact, these foods are high in sugar, fats, and protein that may contra carbohydrates effect on serotonin levels.

1. Milk Chocolate- Increase pleasant feelings and reduce tension. Contrary to common believe, other forms of chocolate do not yield the same effect.
2. Fatty fish containing omega-3 fatty acids-  Reduce mood swing and related disorder
3. Liver, leafy vegetable, nuts and whole grains - Rich in Vitamin Bs that increase energy and elevate mood

So choose your food wisely and feel happy everyday!
